Dr. Suraia Nusrin and Dr. Murshida Mahbub Received A Research Grant from the Ministry of Science and Technology

Dr. Suraia Nusrin, Associate Professor and Chairperson GEB, as the principal investigator and Dr. Murshida Mahbub, Assistant Professor, GEB, as the associate investigator, has received a research grant of Taka 3.5 lac under special allocations (Interdisciplinary group) from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), Govt. of Bangladesh, in the financial year 2023-2024. They had also received a grant of Taka 3 lac from the same source in the financial year 2022-2023. The title of the project is “Analysis of the effects of food and water borne carcinogens on the cancer patients of Bangladesh”.

Synopsis of the research proposal:

Cancer is one of the leading diseases in Bangladesh. Estimated reports published that around 2 lac people are diagnosed with cancer each year, and the number is increasing annually. According to the Bangladesh National Institute of Research and Cancer Hospital's monthly report, the hospital dealt with 46,256 patients in January 2022. The treatment of cancer is very expensive, and from the economic perspective of our country, most patients are unable to continue treatment for a long period. Hence, the aim of this research proposal is to find out the risk factors of various cancers in our country. Some chemicals, such as potassium bromate, DDT (pesticide), and urea used to produce different food items, are reported as carcinogens (cancer causing agents) and are restricted in many countries including USA and UK. In this study different food items (breads, dried fishes and puffed rice) and water samples will be analyzed in the laboratory based on data obtained from the survey during the financial years 2022-2023 and 2023-24. Prevention is always better than treatment; our research output can potentially save many people's lives and relieve them from treatment cost.
